Condensation of 3-aroylpropanoic acids with either formaldehyde or acetaldehyde in sodium hydroxide solution afforded two products: 4-aroyl-4,5-dihydro-2(3H)-furanones, and 3-butenoic or 3-pentenoic acid derivatives.Reactions of the title compounds with hydrazine hydrate and phenylmagnesium bromide have been examined.
