Two new nickel difluorophosphine species: Synthesis, characterization, and discussion regarding the nature of the nickel-difluorophosphine interaction

The study of the coordination chemistry of PF2H has been expanded by the synthesis and characterization of Ni(CO)3(PF2H) and Ni(CO)2(PF2H)2. Spectral data for these complexes are compared with those of related compounds as a probe for investigating bonding interactions of PF2H. Infrared carbonyl stretching frequency data and displacement reactions suggest that the electron-donor-electron-acceptor properties of PF2H are intermediate between those of PF3 and PH3 when the ligands are bound to nickel. This observation contrasts sharply with the donor ability of PF2H when BH3 is the reference acid. In the latter case PF2H is a much stronger base than PF3 or PH3. Acid-base arguments are considered.
