The hitherto unknown 3-hydroxy-6-methoxy-5-methylphthalic acid (III) has been synthesised and condensed with phloroglucinol (VII) and orcinol (VIII) to give 1,3-dihydroxy-7-methoxy-6-methylxanthone-8-carboxyclic acid (I) and 3,6-dimethyl-1-hydroxy-7-methoxyxanthone-8-carboxylic acid (II) respectively as synthetic analogues of naturally occuring 1,7-dihydroxyxanthone-8-carboxylic acid derivatives.
