Acryloyl and crotonoyl chlorides react with the morpholine enamine of 4-ethoxy-carbonyl-4-phenylcyclohexanone to give 1-phenyladamantane-2,4,6-trione and 10a-methyl-1-phenyladamantane-2,4,6-trione, respectively.The structures of the compounds were determined by their 1H and 13C nmr, 1H-1H nmr COSY, 1H-13C nmr COSY and mass spectral data.The course of the reactions leading to the formation of the adamantanetriones and the stereochemistry at the chiral centre, 10-C, are also discussed.
