Regioselective Photocycloaddition of 2-Cyclopentenone to Some Allenes

Irradiation (λ>295 nm) of 2-cyclopentenone in the presence of 3-methyl-1,2-butadiene, 2-methyl-2,3-pentadiene, and 1,2-cyclononadiene gave mixtures of cycloadducts in good yields (>78percent).The mixtures contained head-to-head and head-to-tail isomers in an approximate ratio of 80:20.The additions to the acyclic allenes occurred across the less highly substituted double bond.The mechanism of the reactions is discussed.
