The reaction of 4-(diphenylmethylene)-1-(4H)naphthalenone and its bromine derivatives with benzylamine in boiling methanol leads to the formation of the 3-benzylamino derivatives.Change in the conditions (175 deg C, 4 h) leads to reaction at the carbonyl group. Here N-benzyl-idene-1-amino-4-naphthyldiphenylmethane and 12-(diphenylmethyl)benzophenanthridine were isolated. The presence of the hydrogen atom at the exocyclic carbon atom in the latter is confirmed by the production of radicals of the triphenylmethyl type from them.
