FRET in orthogonally arranged chromophores

Perylene and benzoperylene carboxylic imides were arranged to form a bichromophoric dye with orthogonal electronic transition moments. Thus, exciton interactions between the two chromophores could be excluded, in spite of their proximity. However, quantitative Foerster-type energy transfer proceeds between the chromophores indicated by a fluorescence quantum yield close to unity even with hypsochromic excitation.
