In β-diketones the mercuric ion is bound to carbon atoms even if the central carbon atom is hindered by bulky groups (e.g. i-propyl, t-butyl) or if one oxygen is replaced by nitrogen.In the case of a sulfur atom replacing an oxygen, however, the ligands come into contact with the Hg(2+) at the sulfur atoms; this shown by X-ray crystal structure analysis.
