The 5-substituted phenylglyoxylic esters (3) and amides (4) have been prepared via the corresponding 1,1'oxalylbisisatins (2).The nickel(II) macrocyclic amide complexes (7) have been prepared but the related ester complexes (5) were found to undergo deesterification (hydrolysis and decarboxylation) to provide a convenient route to the proto-complexes (6).
