The oxidation of appropriate methylenebicycloheptanone derivatives provided the diketone 1,4,4-trimethylbicycloheptane-3,6-dione the structure of which was determined by X-ray crystallography.The selective reduction of the carbonyl group at the four-membered ring furnished the corresponding ketone which had previously been transformated to the pheromone component, grandisol.Hence, this paper formally reports a new synthesis of the latter.
