Spectra-structure correlations in the hexahydrates of nickel, cobalt and copper benzenesulphonates

The FTIR spectra of the three title compounds and of their partially deuterated analogues were recorded at both room and liquid-nitrogen temperature. As a consequence of the Jahn-Teller effect, the bands in the OH stretching region of the spectrum of Cu(BS)2.6H2O (BS = benzenesulphonate) are broad and split into at least two components which appear at somewhat higher and lower frequencies than the corresponding hands in the spectra of the cobalt and nickel compounds, indicating both weaker and stronger hydrogen bonding in the former case. The stronger hydrogen bonds are formed by the water molecules equatorially coordinated to Cu2+ ions.
