Reaction of (TPP)FeIIICl in dichloromethane with LiHBEt3 yields (TPP)FeIIIEt.15 Reduction of (TPP)-FeIIIR to [(TPP)FeIIR]- (R = n-propyl, ethyl) by either LiHBEt3 or KHB(i-Bu)3 can be accomplished in benzene/tetrahydrofuran solution, where electron exchange between the iron(III) and iron(II) alkyls is rapid. [(TPP)FeIIR]- is diamagnetic and is reoxidized by dioxygen to (TPP)FeIIIR.
