Photolysis of Ru(CO)5 or Ru3(CO)12 in the presence of trans-cyclooctene (t-COE) gives Ru(CO)5-x-(t-COE)x (x = 1-3). The bis- and tris(olefin) derivatives are obtained as a mixture of two isomers, symmetry D3 and C2. The structure of Ru(CO)2(t-COE)3 (D3 isomer) has been determined by X-ray diffraction.
