The photochromic behaviour of bis-N,N'-salicylideneanilines and N,N'-disalicylidenediamines has been investigated at -75 deg C (dry ice-acetone temperature) in liquid paraffin, and at -180 deg C (liquid air temperature) in methylcyclohexanedecalin (2:1) and PMMA films. It has been observed that these dianils show thermochromic behaviour in solid state and luminescence on irradiation with UV light. All the dianils, except VI,VII,VIII and XIV, undergo colour changes on irradiation with 365 nm wavelength in PMMA films at low temperature. Some of the dianils also show photochromism in rigid glassy solvents at low temperature. The lack of photochromic activity in some of the dianils in liquid paraffin is attributed to the low temperature limit and high viscosity of the medium. The photochromism in dianils may be due to the hydrogen transfer followed by geometrical isomerization by the rotation of C-phenyl or N-phenyl rings or both to form the trans-keto photoproduct.
