(η5-Cyclopentadienyl)tris(acetonitrile)ruthenium(II) hexafluorophosphate undergoes smooth thermal ligand exchange reaction with a variety of indole substrates to yield new complexes in which all three acetonitrile molecules have been replaced. Complexes prepared by this method are [(η6-indole)RuCp]PF6, [(η6-N-methylindole)RuCp]PF6, [(η6-5-methyl-N-methylindole)RuCp]PF6, [(η6-5-bromoindole)RuCp]PF6, [(η6-5-chloro-N-methylindole)RuCp]PF6, [(η6-4-chloro-N-methylindole)RuCp]PF6, and [(η6-5-chloroindole)RuCp]PF6. Complexes [(η6-5-chloro-N-methylindole)RuCp]PF6 and [(η6-4-chloro-N-methylindole)RuCp]PF6 undergo substitution of the chlorine atom with anions generated (NaH/THF) from dimethyl malonate, diethyl malonate, mercaptoacetic acid, and benzyl alcohol. Complexes prepared in this study were [(η6-5-(dicarbomethoxymethyl)-N-methylindole)RuCp]PF6, [(η6-4-(dicarbomethoxymethyl)-N-methylindole)RuCp]PF6, [(η6-5-(dicarbethoxymethyl)-N-methylindole)RuCp]PF6, [(η6-4-(dicarbethoxymethyl)-N-methylindole)RuCp]PF6, [(η6-5-((S)-(carboxymethyl)thio)-N-methylindole)RuCp]PF 6, [(η6-4-((S)-(carboxymethyl)thio)-N-methylindole)RuCp]PF 6, and [(η6-5-(phenylmethoxy)-N-methylindole)RuCp]PF6. Similarly, nucleophilic substitution reaction of [(η6-5-chloro-N-methylindole)RuCp]PF6 with methanol in the presence of excess KOH (20 molar equiv) gave [(η6-5-methoxy-N-methylindole)-RuCp]PF6. Complex [(η6-5-(methylamino)-N-methylindole)RuCp]PF6 was obtained from reaction of [(η6-5-chloro-N-methylindole)RuCp]PF6 with methylamine (40% aqueous solution). Synthesis of complex [(η6-5-(dicarbomethoxymethyl)indole)RuCp]PF6 from complex [(η6-5-chloroindole)RuCp]PF6 is described using the tert-butyldimethylsilyl N-protecting group. Structural data such as IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and microanalysis are given.
