Bimetallic Complexes involving Schiff Base

Phenylmercury derivative (phHgSA) of Schiff base SAH derived from salicylaldehyde and aniline have been prepared.Reaction of this derivative with M(NCS)2, where M=CoII, NiII, CuII and ZnII, gave complexes of general formula (phHgSA)2M(NCS)2.These complexes on further reaction pyridine or bipyridine (L) furnished adducts of general formula (phHgSA)2M(NCS)2Lx, where x=1 or 2.All the complexes have been characterised by elemental analysis, molecular weight, molar conductance, infrared and electronic spectral data.On the basis of these studies, probable structure of the complexes and quantitative softness parameters have been evaluated.

Bimetallic compounds of the types MHg(SCN)4 and (SCN)2M(NCSHgC6H5)2 have been used as lewis acids, making use of unsaturation at M.Phenylmercury derivative of the schiff base (PhHgSA) derived from aniline and salicylaldehyde (SA) has been used as a ligand towards the lewis acids and trimetallic complexes have been prepared.On reaction with PhHgSa, MHg(SCN)4 forms two types of complexes, polymeric bridged and cationic-anionic whereas (SCN)2M(NCSHgC6H5)2 forms monomeric bridged and cationic-anionic complexes.The cationic-anionic complexes are formed when M is Zn(II).The ligand PhHgSA, has been classified as a weak ligand in the spectrochemical series.The structures of the complexes have been investigated with the help of various physicochemical techniques.Additional support to the proposed structures is provided by the softness parameters of the complexes.
