The reaction between RuCl(C=CHBut)(PPh3)(η-C5Me5) and Fe2(CO)9 afforded the salt [Ru(CO)2(PPh3)- (η-C5Me5)] [Fe3(μ3-C2But)(CO)9], which has been characterized by a single-crystal X-ray structure determination. The cation has a piano-stool structure, while the anion contains a CCBut ligand sitting on a triangular Fe3 cluster.

The chloro complexes 5-C5Me5)Ru(norbornadiene)Cl> (2), 5-C5Me5)Ru-(ButNC)2Cl> (3), 5-C5Me5)Ru-(PPh3)(ButNC)Cl> (4) and 5-C5Me5)Ru(PPh3)-(CO)Cl> (5) have been prepared from 5-C5Me5)Ru(PPh3)2Cl (1).Reaction of 3-5 with sodium methoxide gave the corresponding hydrides 7-9.All the chloro complexes 1-5 ionise readily in methanol containing NH4PF6 and a donor ligand to give a range of new cations as hexafluorophosphate salts.Treatment of 1 and 4 with NOBF4 gave the dicationic nitrosyls, 5-C5Me5)Ru(PPh3)2NO>(BF4)2 (12) and 5-C5Me5)Ru(PPh3)ButNC)NO>(BF4)2 (17), respectively.
