Binuclear manganese complexes have been prepared (a) via the use of bridging quadradentate bis(Schiff bases) and dipicolinates and (b) with bis(μ-oxo) groups and one or two picolinate ligands per manganese. Their redox chemistry, which has been characterized by cyclic voltammetry and controlled-potential coulometry, indicates that the electron-transfer mechanisms are ligand-centered rather than metal-centered. Several of the complexes appear to be effective reaction mimics and models for the manganese cofactor in photosystem II that facilitates water oxidation to dioxygen.
