Unsupported monomeric stibine oxides (R3SbO) remain undiscovered

supporting information, p. 3484 - 3487 (2021/04/12)
Attempts to investigate the properties and reactivity of the stiboryl moiety (R3Sb+-O?or R3SbO), as in monomeric stibine oxides free of interaction with Lewis acids/bases, led us to conclude that this functional

The triorganoantimony oxides prepared by oxidation of R3Sb (R=4-ClC6H4, 4-FC6H4, 2-CH3OC6H4, 2,5-(CH3)2C6H3) and of 9-phenyl-9-stibafluoren, (C6H5)(2,2'-C6H4C6H4)Sb, with H2O2 in acetone, shown by IR data to be dimeric in the solid state, and a structure with a four-membered Sb-O-Sb-O ring is proposed. The analogous oxidation of tris(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)antimony produced a dihydroxide, the structure of which has been determined by X-ray diffraction. In this compound Sb has only a slightly distorted trigonal bipyramidal environment with OH groups in apical positions. The Sb-O(H) bond distance of 202.7(3) pm is in the normal range of covalent SbO bond distances.Intermolecular hydrogen bonding is excluded by the IR and diffraction data.

Tris(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)antimony dihydroxide, Mes3Sb(OH)2, which was prepared by oxidation of Mes3Sb with H2O2, has been shown to react with RSO3H (R=C6H5, CF3) to give the adducts Mes3SbO*HO3SR, the first examples of solid hydrogen-bonded adducts of a triorganoantimony oxide and an acid. The crystal structure of Mes3SbO*HO3SC6H5 has been determined. The three C(mesityl) atoms and the O atom form a distored tetrahedron around Sb, the distortion by the bulky mesityl groups being reflected in the C-Sb-C angles (mean:114.7(3) deg) and the C-Sb-C angles: (mean:103.5(2) deg).C6H5SO3H is linked via a short hydrogen bond to O on Sb with O(1)...O(2)=256(1) pm.The bond length Sb-O(1) 189.4(5) pm represents the shortest Sb-O distance ever reported.
