Photoinduced Reductive Addition Reactions of 2-Alkenoyl-1,4-benzoquinones with Alcohols

Irradiation of 2-alkenoyl-3,5-dimethyl-1,4-benzoguinones 1 in alcohol under a nitrogen atmosphere afforded two isomeric adducts: benzofuranone derivatives 4 and alkenyl ether derivatives 5.The ratios of 4 to 5 depended both on the nature of the alkenoyl substituents and on the alcohols used as solvent.Irradiation of some quinones 1 dissolved in tert-butyl alcohol gave, however, 3-substituted chromone derivatives 13 as additional products.
