Irradiation of a mixture of isophorone and ethyl penta-2,3-dienoate (1a) or ethyl hexa-2,3-dienoate (1b) or ethyl 4-methyl-hexa-2,3-dienoate (1c) in methanol leads to novel addition compounds (2a-c) as major products and cyclobutane-adducts (3a-c) and (4a,b) as minor products.A mechanistic rationale for formation of 2a-c (E geometry around 3,4-double bond) is proffered.

UV irradiation (pyrex filter) of isophorone in presence of ethyl 2,3-pentadienoate (1) and ethyl 2,3-hexadienoate (2) in methanol yields a single geometric isomer each of the respective addition compounds, 3 and 4, as the major products.
