The action of aqueous ammonia on the sulfonic acids of α-hydroxyantharaquinones leads to transformation of the hydroxy group into a carbonyl group and to the formation of the corresponding derivatives of 9-amino-1,10-antharaquinone. 9,10-Diamino-1,5-anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonic acid, i.e., first representative of previously unknown derivatives of 1,5-anthraquinone, was obtained from 1,5-dihydroxyanthraquinone-2,6-disulfonic acid by this method.
