This paper presents a multiform study on the chemical and electrochemical properties of a new family of terminal vinylidene and vinylphosphonium complexes of rhodium(I) synthesized by electrophilic attack at the β-carbon of the σ-acetylide ligand in [(NP3)Rh(σ-C≡CR)] (R = Ph (1), CO2Et (2)) and [(PP3)Rh(σ-C≡CR)] (R = Ph (3), CO2Et (4), CHO (5)) respectively (NP3 = N(CH2CH2PPh2)3; PP3 = P(CH2CH2PPh2)3). Particular attention has been devoted to the reactions of the trigonal-bipyramidal vinylidene complexes [(NP3)Rh=C=C(H)(R)]+ with oxidizing agents.

Thermal decomposition in THF of the diamagnetic vinylidene complex [(np3)RhC=C(H)Ph]+, obtained by protonation of [(np3)RhC≡CPh], affords H2 and the paramagnetic σ-acetylide complex of rhodium(II) [(np3)RhC≡CPh]+ which has been characterized by chemical, electrochemical, and ESR techniques [np3 = N(CH2CH2PPh2)3].
