The basic metal cluster chemistry of the unsaturated cluster Fe4(CO)11(PPh)2 was developed in two directions. Following an improved synthesis of the parent compound the whole series of clusters M4-(CO)11(PPh)2 including the Fe4, Fe3Ru, Fe2Ru2, FeRu3, and Ru4 members has been obtained and separated. In their unsaturated behavior all members of the series except the Fe4 compound resemble the Ru4 compound; i.e., they add 2 equiv of CO with cluster unfolding. Further addition and substitution derivatives of the Fe4 cluster were obtained with isonitrile and phosphine ligands. Using the p-phenylene bidentate ligands (MeO)2P-C6H4-P(OMe)2 and CN-C6H4-NC the two cluster units Fe4(CO)10(PPh)2 and Fe4(CO)9-(PPh)2P(OMe)3 could be linked forming Fe4-LL-Fe4 double clusters. Analogously the triple cluster Fe4(CO)10(PPh)2-(MeO)2PC 6H4P(OMe)2-Fe4(CO) 9(PPh)2-(MeO)2PC6H 4P(OMe)2-Fe4(CO)10(PPh)2 was obtained. The crystal structure of the double cluster Fe4(CO)10(PPh)2-(MeO)2PC 6H4P(OMe)2-Fe4-(CO) 10(PPh)2 was determined: triclinic, P1, a = 1135.5 (6) pm, b = 1005.8 (6) pm, c = 1615.2 (7) pm, α = 103.78 (7)°, β = 91.38 (6)°, γ = 68.34 (6)°, V = 1.660 (1) nm3, Z = 1.
