The reaction of 4-alkyl-1-cyclohexene-1-carbonyl and 4-alkyl-3-cyclohexene-1-carbonyl chlorides with 4-substituted phenols gave mesomorphous esters characterized by higher and lower formation temperatures, respectively, and a narrower temperature range for the existence of the nematic phase than the analogous derivatives of trans-4-alkylcyclohexane-1-carboxylic acids.
