Reaction of 2,6-Diaryl-3-halopyran-4(H)-ones with Sodium Hydroxide

The reaction of 2,6-diaryl-3-halopyran-4(H)-ones (1) with hydroxide ion in aqueous ethanol leads to 2-aryl-3-hydroxy-(4H)-pyrones (2) while in absolute ethanol 1a-e with OH- afford 3(2H)-furanones (4) and 2.Spectral and chemical evidences have been used to assign structures to the above compounds.Pathways for these transformations are suggested.
