The acetates of polyhydroxylated steroids obtained from the starfish Asterina pectinifera Mueller et Troschel were studied by 1H-NMR spectroscopy. The 1H-NMR spectra of five kinds of acetates of polyhydroxylated cholestanes were measured in deuteriochloroform and deuteriopyridine solutions and then compared.Marked differences were observed between the spectra obtained in both solvents. The spectra in deuteriopyridine were more usefull than those in deuteriochloroform in providing information on the structure of the parent polyhydroxylated cholestanes. The isolation and structures of the two new polyhydroxylated cholestanes 1 and 8 are a lso described. Moreover, the antitumor activities of some polyhydroxylated steroids from this starfish were examined.
