A study was conducted to demonstrate the production of sila- and germaplatinacycles from a stepwise E-E bond forming reaction. Two alternative pathways for the formation of E-E bonds were demonstrated. These alternative pathways started from bis(silyl) or bis(germyl)platinum complexes, either through a platinum-silyllene or -germylene intermediate or through a reductive-elimination and oxidative-addition pathway. It was demonstrated that reaction of 9,9-dihydridosilafluorene (H2SiC12H 8) with the chelating phosphine complex (dppe)PtMe28 2 in ca. 4:1 ratio in toluene-d8 resulted in the formation of the bis(silyl)platinum complex (dppe)Pt(SiHC12H8) 2. The novel platinatetetrasilacycle 4 was also obtained as a minor product in 8% in the form of a yellow solid when the reaction was carried out at 75 °C for a period of 19 hours.
