Condensation of N-(hydroxyalkyl)aryl-amides/imides (I) with β-naphthol gives 1-(aryl-amido/imido-alkyl)-2-naphthols (II) which on reaction with aniline in the presence of Zn dust afford 1-(aryl-amido/imido-alkyl)-N-aryl-2-naphthylamines (III).Heating of III in the presence of sulphur and iodine furnishes 11-(aryl-amido/imido-alkyl)-12-H-benzophenothiazines (IV).Condensation of IV with N-hydroxyalkyl-amides/imides affords 11,12-bis(aryl-amido/imido-alkyl)-12H-benzophenothiazines (V).Some of the compounds show anthelmintic activity ranging from 5 to 95percent.
