THIAZOPYR is used as a preemergent herbicide for the purpose of controlling annual grasses and certain broadleaf weeds on citrus crops. It is applied before the emergence of the weeds to prevent their growth and protect the crop yield.
However, it is important to note that THIAZOPYR is not permitted as an active ingredient by the European Commission after July 25, 2003, and is not approved for use in EU countries. Despite this restriction, it remains registered for use in the United States, where it continues to serve as an effective herbicidal solution for agricultural applications.

The present invention relates to a method to prepare 2-pyridyl substituted dihydrothiazoles of the formula: comprising the steps of: a) heating a mixture of a compound of the formula: wherein X is chloro, bromo, iodo, thiol, or hydroxy; Y1and Y2and independently hydrogen or alkyl; R2, R4, R5, and R6are independently hydrogen, halo, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkylalkyl, alkylthioalkyl, bis(alkylthio)alkyl, cyano, fluorinated methyl, chlorofluorinated methyl, chlorinated methyl, or wherein Z1is O, S, or NR7wherein R7is alkyl and Z2is alkoxy, alkenoxy, alkynoxy, alkylthio, pyrazolyl, haloalkoxy, cyanoalkoxy, chloro or -NHR8wherein R8is lower alkyl; and P2S5in a solvent at reflux; and b) degassing the mixture while heating.
