The reaction of 3,6-dioxocholest-4-ene (I) and 6-oxocholest-4-ene (II) with ethyl acetoacetate in the presence of fused zinc chloride affords 3'-carbethoxy-2'-methyl-3-oxo-5-cholesteno-γ-pyran (V) and 3'-carbethoxy-2'-methyl-4,6-cholestadieno-2',3'-dyhydropyran (VI), respectively.Under similar reaction conditions 3-oxocholest-4-en-6β-yl bromide (III) gives 3'-carbethoxy-2'-methyl-3-oxocholestan-6,7-dihydropyran (VII) in addition to 3-oxocholesta-4,6-diene (IV); the latter also provides VII on reaction with ethyl acetoacetate.
