Synthesis of Angular Furanoisoflavanones

Three furanoisoflavanones (11a,b,c) have been synthesised from 2,4-dihydroxydesoxybenzoins (4a,b,c) using the following steps: (i) C-allylation with allyl bromide in the presence of methanolic KOH (ii) isoflavanone formation using ethoxymethyl chloride method of Jain and Mehta , (iii) removal of ethoxymethyl group with methanolic HCl, (iv) cleavage of C-allyl group to isoflavanone-8-acetaldehyde (10) followed by cyclisation with polyphosphoric acid.
