During the alkylation of the sodium or tetrabutylammonium salt of 2-butyryl-4-methoxycarbonyl-5,5-dimethylcyclohexane-1,3-dione with dimethyl sulfate in acetone or methylene chloride a mixture of the regioisomeric methyl ethers is formed.The composition of the mixture depends on the reaction conditions.Methyl ethers of other β-triketones in the cyclohexane series were obtained similarly.The structure of the obtained compounds was established by differential spectroscopy of the nuclear Overhauser effect.
