Trans-α,β-difluorocinnamaldehyde and its derivatives were obtained by the reaction of aryl-α,β-difluorostyryllithium with N-formylpiperidine.They react with malononitrile at the carbonyl group with the formation of aryldicyanodifluorobutadienes.In reaction with the quaternary salts of 2-methylbenzothiazole and 2,3,3-trimethylindolenine 4-dimethylamino-α,β-difluorocinnamaldehyde gives β-(p-dimethylaminophenyl)-γ-fluoro-substituted dicarbocyanines instead of the vinylogs of styryl dyes.
