(E)-3-Methyl-2,4-pentadienylsilane (6) was coupled with the acetals of (E)-4-methoxycinnamaldehyde (5) in the presence of a catalytic amount of iodotrimethylsilane to afford (3E,7E)-6-alkoxy-8-(4-methoxyphenyl-3-methyl)-1,3,7-octatrienes (2).Silane 6 and (E)-4-methoxycinnamaldehyde (4) gave (3E, 7E)-6-hydroxy-8-(4-methoxyphenyl)-3-methyl-1,3,7-octatriene (1) in fluoride ion induced reactions.We investigated the effect of various sources of fluoride ion (TBAF, KF/18-crown-6, KF.2H2O KF/Celite and KF/alumina with combination of TBACl, Aliquat 336), reaction conditionsand work-up procedures on the yield of 1.Esters (3) of alcohol 1 were also prepared.
