The addition of phthalimidonitrene, generated during the thermolysis of S,S-dimethyl-N-phthalimidosulfimide, to p-methoxystyrene leads to the unstable 2-p-methoxyphenyl-1-phthalimidoaziridine.With oxidative generation of the nitrene by the action of lead tetraacetate on N-aminophthalimide it is only possible to isolate the products from the opening of the three-membered ring by acetic acid, i.e., 1-p-methoxyphenyl-2-(2,2-phthaloylhydrazino)ethyl acetate and the 1,1-phthaloylhydrazone of 2-oxo-1-p-methoxyphenylethyl acetate produced during its oxidation.
