The bis-carbene complexes p-2(C6H4) and p,p'-2(C6H4)2 (M=Cr, W) react with diphenylacetylene in two different ways: (a) benzannulation leading to naphthol derivatives (M=Cr) and (b) cycloaddition giving indene derivatives.The preparation and spectroscopic data of these compounds are reported and discussed.
