Synthesis and reactivity of ruthenium hydride complexes of chelating triphosphines. 51. Reactions of acetylenes with RuHCl(Cyttp) and RyH4(Cyttp) (Cyttp = C6H5P(CH2CH2CH2P(c-C6H11)2)2)

Treatment of RuHCl(Cyttp) with PhC≡C-C=CPh in benzene produced syn,mer-RuCl(η3-PhC3CHPh) (Cyttp), which isomerizes into anti,mer-RuCl(η3-PhC3CHPh)(Cyttp) in dichloromethane or methanol. Reaction of RuHCl(Cyttp) with MeO2CC≡CCO2Me yielded RuCl(MeO2CC=CHCO2Me)(Cyttp). Acetylide complexes RuCl(C≡CR) (Cyttp) (R = Ph, (CH2)5CH3)) were produced when RuHCl(Cyttp) was treated with HC≡CR. Reactions of RuH4(Cyttp) with MeO2CC≡CCO2Me and PhC≡CPh gave facRu(η4-MeO2CCH=CHCO2Me)(Cyttp) and Ru(PhC≡CPh)(Cyttp), respectively. Reaction of RuH4(Cyttp) with 1-octyne produced Ru(C≡C(CH2)5CH3)2(Cyttp). Reaction of RuH4(Cyttp) with excess phenylacetylene produced Ru(C≡CPh)(η3-PhC3CHPh)(Cyttp).
Synthesis and reactivity of ruthenium hydride complexes of chelating triphosphines. 2. X-ray structure determination of the novel compound Ru(CCPh)(η3-PhC3CHPh)(Cyttp) (Cyttp = C6H5P(CH2CH2CH2P(c-C6H11)2)21)

The reaction of RuH4(Cyttp) with phenylacetylene under mild conditions gives a unique type of compound Ru(CCPh)(η3-PhC3CHPh)(Cyttp) (1) which contains an acetylide and the unusual η3-PhC3CHPh carbon-carbon coupling product as ligands. Phosphorus-31,1H, and13C{1H} NMR data in solution are consistent with the results of an X-ray single-crystal structure determination of 1. This unusual complex contains the chelating triphosphine Cyttp in a meridional arrangement around ruthenium, a linear acetylide, and the η3-PhC3CHPh ligand, which is probably formed by end-to-end coupling of two phenylacetylene fragments.
