A versatile hybrid polyphenylsilane host for highly efficient solution-processed blue and deep blue electrophosphorescence

Sun, Dianming,Zhou, Xiaokang,Li, Huihui,Sun, Xiaoli,Zheng, Yonghao,Ren, Zhongjie,Ma, Dongge,Bryce, Martin R.,Yan, Shouke

, p. 8277 - 8284 (2014)

A universal hybrid polymeric host (PCzSiPh) for blue and deep blue phosphors has been designed and synthesized by incorporating electron-donating carbazole as pendants on a polytetraphenylsilane main chain. The polymer PCzSiPh (4) has a wide bandgap and high triplet energy (ET) because of the tetrahedral geometry of the silicon atom in the tetraphenylsilane backbone. The distinct physical properties of good solubility, combined with high thermal and morphological stability give amorphous and homogenous PCzSiPh films by solution processing. As a result, using PCzSiPh as host with the guest iridium complex TMP-FIrpic gives blue phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (PhOLEDs) with overall performance which far exceeds that of a control device with poly(vinylcarbazole) (PVK) host. Notably, FIrpic-based devices exhibit a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 14.3% (29.3 cd A-1, 10.4 lm W-1) which are comparable to state-of-the-art literature data using polymer hosts for a blue dopant emitter. Moreover, the versatility of PCzSiPh extends to deep blue PhOLEDs using FIr6 and FCNIrpic as dopants, with high efficiencies of 11.3 cd A-1 and 8.6 cd A-1, respectively. This journal is

Synthesis and properties of wide bandgap polymers based on tetraphenylsilane and their applications as hosts in electrophosphorescent devices

, p. 3344 - 3349 (2018)

Wide bandgap materials are important in the organic optoelectronic field. In this study, a diphenylphosphine oxide-functionalized tetraphenylsilane moiety was designed and applied in the construction of wide bandgap materials. The wide bandgap polymer PFSCPO was synthesized via a Suzuki coupling reaction between diphenylphosphine oxide substituted tetraphenylsilane and carbazole modified dihexylfluorene. PFSC without the diphenylphosphine oxide group was also prepared for comparison. They both show high thermal stabilities and good morphological stabilities. Doped films using these two polymers as hosts and Ir(ppy)3 as a guest were prepared via the spin-coating method. Compared with PFSC, the diphenylphosphine oxide group with strong electron-withdrawing property decreased the LUMO energy level of PFSCPO and facilitated electron injection in OLEDs. The turn-on voltage was 7.5 V in the PFSC/Ir(ppy)3 doped device, which reduced to 6.3 V in the PFSCPO/Ir(ppy)3 doped device. The maximum current efficiency also increased from 8.83 cd A-1 to 9.33 cd A-1.

, p. 5019 - 5027 (2014/06/24)

In this paper, we report the design and synthesis of a novel bipolar violet emitting molecule CzPySiSF. The carbazole and pyridine moieties are employed to facilitate charge injection and balance carrier transport, whereas the spirofluorene is used as the violet emitter. The three functional groups, i.e., carbazole, pyridine and spirofluorene, are connected to tetraphenylsilane in a stepwise fashion using classical coupling reactions such as Suzuki and Ullmann. The resultant bipolar molecule CzPySiSF exhibits very stable thermal properties and a uniform amorphous morphology. The introduction of spirofluorene greatly enhances the fluorescence quantum efficiency of the molecule; moreover the PL spectrum of CzPySiSF in THF is mainly located in the violet region. The EL spectrum of CzPySiSF matches well with the PL spectrum with a maximum at 408 nm. The violet OLED of CzPySiSF exhibits the maximum external quantum efficiency of 0.59%. Tang, Xiangyang,Yao, Liang,Liu, He,Shen, Fangzhong,Zhang, Shitong,Zhang, Huanhuan,Lu, Ping,Ma, Yuguang

supporting information, p. 7589 - 7592 (2014/07/07)

A multifunctional AIE-active molecule, CzPySiTPE, in which carbazole (Cz) and pyridine (Py) were attached to tetraphenylsilane to facilitate carrier injection has been designed and synthesized. Tetraphenylethene (TPE) was adopted to maintain efficient blue emission. Blue electroluminescent (EL) emission of CzPySiTPE was obtained with CIE coordinates of (0.16, 0.17) and an external quantum efficiency of 1.12 %. A multifunctional AIE-active molecule has been synthesized to combine the merits of carbazole, pyridine, and tetraphenylethene moieties. This molecule exhibits blue emission with CIE coordinates of (0.16, 0.17) and an external quantum efficiency of 1.12 % (see figure; AIE=aggregation induced emission).

New cyano functionalized silanes: Synthesis, characterization and diphenylamine detection

Wang, Linlin,Wang, Dengxu,Wang, Hua,Feng, Shengyu

, p. 40 - 45 (2014/07/07)

A series of novel tetrahedral silicon-centered cyano functionalized silanes, bis(4-cyanodiphenyl)dimethylsilane (1), bis(4-cyanodiphenyl) diphenylsilane (2), tri(4-cyandiphenyl)methylsilane (3), tri(4-cyandiphenyl) phenylsilane (4), and tetra(4-cyandiphenyl) silane (5), have been synthesized by Suzuki coupling reactions. They all display high thermal stability, and are fluorescent with strong emission in the region of violet to blue. Furthermore, 1-5 all exhibited the linear fluorescent quenching response to diphenylamine (DPA) with the high binding constants up to 1.0 × 106 M -1 in dichloromethane solution, demonstrating the potential application in DPA detection.

Tetrahedral silicon-based luminescent molecules: Synthesis and comparison of thermal and photophysical properties by various effect factors

Wang, Dengxu,Wang, Linlin,Xue, Lei,Zhou, Debo,Feng, Shengyu,Zhao, Xian

, p. 58 - 64 (2013/06/26)

A series of luminescent molecules were presented employing the tetrahedral structural motif of the silicon atom, which further connected different N-containing heterocycle functional groups in their periphery using phenyl rings as the bridges. These compounds included three kinds of N-heterocycle functional silanes: imidazole derivatives (1a-h), pyrazole derivatives (2a-e) and benzimidazole derivatives (3a-b), and their structures were fully characterized by FT-IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and HRMS. The TGA results indicate that they all exhibit high thermal stabilities. The photophysical properties demonstrate that they are fluorescent in the violet-blue region and could be potentially applied as blue emitters for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). The effect factors of sort, disposition and number of substituent groups and N-containing heterocycle functional groups on their thermal and photophysical properties were investigated. Molecular calculations were also performed to support the experimental results. Moreover, the computational results reveal that these compounds all exhibit relatively large HOMO-LUMO band gaps with the range from 4.82 eV (2d) to 5.19 eV (1a and 2c), making them become promising candidates as host materials for emitters and hole/electron blocking materials in OLEDs display.

Wang, Dengxu,Niu, Yuzhong,Wang, Yike,Han, Jianjun,Feng, Shengyu

experimental part, p. 2329 - 2337 (2010/10/05)

A series of novel tetrahedral silicon-centered imidazolyl derivatives, Bis(4-(imidazol-1-yl)phenyl)dimethylsilane (1), Tri(4-(imidazol-1-yl)phenyl) methyl silane (2), Bis(4-(imidazol-1-yl)phenyl)diphenylsilane (3), Tri(4-(imidazol-1-yl)phenyl)phenylsilane (4), [Bis(4-(imidazol-1-yl)phenyl)](4- bromophenyl)phenylsilane (5) and [Tri(4-(imidazol-1-yl)phenyl)](4-bromophenyl) silane (6) have been synthesized and characterized by FTIR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and mass spectroscopy. They all display high thermal stability, are fluorescent with emission in the region of violet to blue, and possess large HOMO-LUMO energy gaps ranging from 4.9585 to 5.1879 eV, which could be potentially used as blue emitters or hole blocking materials in OLEDs. Moreover, the metal ion titrations based on Ag (I) and compounds 1-4 reveal that these ligands show distinguishable fluorescence response with increasing of Ag (I) ions.
