12032-36-9 Usage
Chemical Properties
Different sources of media describe the Chemical Properties of 12032-36-9 differently. You can refer to the following data:
1. Red-brown, crystalline solid.decomposes in water.
2. Magnesium Sulfide is a red-brown, crystalline solid, decomposes above 2000 C, decomposes in water.
Physical properties
MgS is a white crystalline material but is often
encountered in an impure form that is a brown noncrystalline
powder.
The chemical properties of MgS resemble those of
related ionic sulfides such as those of Na, Ba, and Ca.
Magnesium Sulfide reacts with oxygen to form the corresponding sulfate,
magnesium sulfate. MgS reacts with water to give
hydrogen sulfide and magnesium hydroxide.
Uses
Magnesium Sulfide is the source of hydrogen sulfide, laboratory reagent.
Preparation
Magnesium Sulfide
can be prepared by the direct reaction of the elements,
calcined in an inert atmosphere, at a 1:1.1 molecular
ratio:
Mg+ S+ heat→MgS
MgS also forms by the reaction of hydrogen sulfide gas with soluble magnesium salts in solution.
Aside from being a component
of some slags, MgS is a rare nonterrestial mineral
“niningerite” detected in some meteorites.
Magnesium sulfide is available commercially from
a number of suppliers.
Check Digit Verification of cas no
The CAS Registry Mumber 12032-36-9 includes 8 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 5 digits, 1,2,0,3 and 2 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 3 and 6 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 12032-36:
(7*1)+(6*2)+(5*0)+(4*3)+(3*2)+(2*3)+(1*6)=49
49 % 10 = 9
So 12032-36-9 is a valid CAS Registry Number.

Millimeter-wave spectrum of MgSH
Taleb-Bendiab, Amine,Chomiak, Darren
, p. 195 - 199 (2001)
The pure rotational spectrum of MgSH was observed for the first time, using millimeter-wave absorption spectroscopy in the 280-365 GHz region. This short-lived gas phase free radical was produced in a high-temperature cell by the reaction of Mg metal vapor with H2S in the presence of an electrical discharge. The spectrum was analyzed using an S-reduced asymmetric rotor Hamiltonian to obtain molecular parameters, including rotational, centrifugal distortion, and spin-rotation constants. The analysis of the spectrum indicated that MgSH is bent, in agreement with an ab initio calculation. The ∠Mg-S-H angle obtained from the analysis was 87.5 ± 6.7°, as compared to a calculated ab initio value of 91.1°.
