Side-Chain Cholesteric Liquid Crystalline Elastomers Derived from a Mesogenic Cross-Linking Agent

The synthesis of the two monomers M1 and M2 and a series of new side-chain cholesteric liquid crystalline elastomers P 2-P8 is presented. The chemical structures of the monomers and elastomers obtained were confirmed by FTIR or 1H NMR spectroscopy. The cross-link density of the elastomers was determined by swelling experiments. The mesomorphic properties were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analyses (TGA), polarizing optical microscopy (POM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. Monomer M1 showed a cholesteric phase, and M2 revealed smectic and nematic phases. The effect of the cross-link density on the phase behavior of P2-P8 is discussed. Elastomers P 2-P6 containing less than 12 mol % of the cross-linking units displayed elasticity, reversible liquid crystalline phase transition, wide mesophase temperature ranges, and high thermal stability. Elastomer P 7 displayed stress-induced birefringence, and P8 showed only elasticity with no other texture. Experimental results demonstrated that the glass transition temperatures increased, and the isotropization temperatures and the mesophase temperature ranges of P2-P 6 decreased with increasing cross-link density.

The invention discloses a spiropyrane derivative with color, fluorescence and liquid crystal property triple switching effects as well as a preparation method and application of the spiropyrane derivative. The spiropyrane derivative is prepared by esterification reaction of 1',3',3'-trimethyl-6-nitrospiro[benzopyran-2,2'-dihydroindole]-5', 8-diol and alkyl / alkoxy substituted benzoic acid with alkyl / alkoxy group at para-position or acrylate / methacrylate group at the chain end. The spiropyran derivative is used as a molecular switch in a smart material. The spiropyran derivative has responsiveness to light, heat, pH value and force, has triple switchable effects of color, fluorescence and liquid crystal property, has significant difference in response behaviors in different chemical environments, and is suitable for being used as a molecular switch in an intelligent material.
Synthesis and photoinduced reorientation of liquid crystalline polymers with phenyl thiobenzoate side groups

Liquid crystalline poly(meth)acrylates (LCPs) with 4-methoxyphenyl thiobenzoate side groups were synthesized to attain a photoinduced molecularly oriented structure, which is transparent in the visible region. The axis-selective photoreaction and photoinduced reorientation behaviors of the thin films were investigated using linearly polarized (LP) 313 nm light. The axis-selective photoreaction of the side groups generated an optical anisotropy in all the LCP films, but the amplitude depended on the alkylene spacer length and the type of the polymer main chain. The photoirradiated films were transparent in the visible region because the photoreacted products expressed less color. The axis-selective photoreaction of films followed by the thermally generated self-organization processes effectively induced an in-plane molecular reorientation perpendicularly to light polarization with an in-plane order parameter (S) of 0.62 and birefringence (Δn) ~ 0.17, when the mesogenic groups were connected to the polymer main chain via hexamethylene spacers. In contrast, the out-of-plane reorientation dominated when the LCPs contained long alkylene spacers.

There is provided a novel dichroic dye having liquid crystal properties, dichroic properties and polymerizable reactivity, the dichroic dye being used to form a color filter layer having excellent physical properties such as dichroic ratio, heat resistance, durability, high contrast ratio and polarizing properties, a composition comprising the same for color filter, a color filter array plate (an upper plate) prepared therefrom, and a liquid crystal display comprising the color filter array plate. The dichroic dye has a structure of R1-L1-M-L2-D (wherein, D is a dichroic structure, M is a structure with liquid crystal properties, R1 is a reactive end functional group, and L and L1 are linking structures that link R1, M, and D), and the composition for forming a color filter layer includes the dichroic dye. Also, the color filter array plate, which comprises color filter layer formed of the composition of this invention and the liquid crystal display, which comprise the color filter array plate but does not requires an upper alignment film and/or a polarization plate are provided. The color filter array plate and the liquid crystal display comprising the same have excellent physical properties such as durability, polarizing degree, resolution and contrast ratio.

The synthesis and characterization of photoluminescent crosslinking agents containing a fluorene core are described. They exhibit an efficient fluorescence and have a promesogenic molecular shape that depending on the substitution results in the development of thermotropic mesophases. A difunctionalized fluorene derivative has been incorporated into a liquid crystal host in order to produce polarized light emitting films. These films have been prepared by the in-situ photopolymerization technique.

Ordered polymeric networks are produced via the photopolymerization of liquid-crystalline (LC) diacrylates. When these diacrylates are derived from aromatic rings, the networks show UV-light instability. In order to overcome this problem, the cyclohexane analogues of two of these LC diacrylates were synthesized. The newly formed molecules exhibit much lower UV absorption than their aromatic analogues but also completely different phase behaviour. One of them showed a highly viscous LC phase, the other lacks LC properties.

A mesogenic acrylate monomer 4-(2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidyl-4-oxy)phenyl 4'-(6-acryloyloxyhexyl)benzoate was synthesized and copolymerized with 4-cyclohexyloxyphenyl 4'-(6-acryloyloxyhexyloxy)benzoate.Oxidation of the copolymer yielded a nitroxide-containing liquid-crystalline side-chain polymer.

This paper is concerned with the synthesis and thermal properties for five families of side-chain type liquid crystalline polymers.All these side-chain type polymers showed an enantiotropic mesomorphic nature.A sharp reflexion was observed in the small angle region, whereas a broad halo or a relatively sharp peak was also detected in the wide angle region for all the polymers.The experimental values of the thickness of the smectic layer which can be easily assigned by the polarizing microscopic measurements were smaller than that of the calculated ones.This difference would be caused from the tilted arrangement in the smectic layer or smectic A like structure in which the side chain would be overlapped.

The synthesis of a series of liquid crystalline side-chain polyacrylates in which the mesogenic group is 1-(4-benzoyloxyphenyl)-2-(4'-cyanophenyl)ethane is reported.Methylenic spacer groups of different lengths have been used.Polymers were prepared by radical polymerization (AIBN as initiator) of the corresponding acrylates.The liquid crystalline nature of these polymers was established by calorimetric measurements, optical texture observations and X-ray investigations.For the polymer where n=6, the unusual I-N-SAd-Nre sequence was observed.
