A synthesis of the enantiomerically pure α-hydroxy lactols 1a-4a is described.With a lactol and an α-hydroxy lactol, which has trans hydroxy groups, being present in the reaction mixture at the same time, the latter reacts with an amine with considerable functional specifity, whereas the lactol preferentially forms an acetal with an alcohol. α-Hydroxy lactols with cis hydroxy groups practically do not react under the reaction conditions.
