Aliphatic and aromatic amino acids open the ring in 5-aryl-2,3-dihydrofuran-2,3-diones with the formation of the carboxyalkyl- and carboxyphenylamides of aroylpyruvic acids.When heated with thionyl chloride, the products undergo cyclization to 2-aroylacetyl-4H-3,1-benzoxazin-4-ones.
