The reaction of 3-carboxy-5,5,5-trifluoro-4-hydroxy-4-phenylpentanoic acid (1) with NaH/Me2SO4 gave 3-carboxy-5,5,5-trifluoro-4-methoxy-4-phenylpentanoic acid (4) and a defluorinated compound 5. 3-Chlorocarbonyl-4-phenyl-4-(trifluoromethyl)butanolide (9) was obtained from the reaction of the corresponding 3-carboxybutanolide 3 with PCl5 at low temperature; heating yielded the 2,5-furandione 10.Attempted hydrogenation of 10, followed by hydrolysis gave the defluorinated compound 5.
