Pummerer reaction when applied to adducts obtained through Diels-Alder reaction between methyl Z or E(R)3-p-tolyl-sulfinylpropenoate and cyclopentadiene yielded mostly (+) and (-)methyl-3-p-tolylthio bicyclo hepta-2,5-diene-2-carboxylates.Smooth acidic hydrolys of both enantiomeric vinyl sulfides enabled the first synthesis of chiral β-ketoesters: (+)-(1S,2S,4R) and (-)-(1R,2R,4S)methyl-3-oxo bicyclo hept-5-ene-2-carboxylates.
