The action of 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine on aroylbenzoic acids leads to the formation of stable 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazones, which are dehydrated when heated with acetic anhydride and sodium acetate and converted into 1-oxo-2-(2,4-dinitrophenyl)-4-aryl-1,2-dihydrophthalazines.The hydrazones were not obtained in the reaction with 4-nitrophenylhydrazine.The products had 1-oxo-1,2-dihydrophthalazine structures.
