The reaction of InCl3 with 3 equiv of MesMgBr (Mes = mesityl, 2,4,6-Me3C6H2) yields InMes3 (1). The molecular structure of 1 consists of discrete monomeric units in which the three mesityl groups are crystallographically inequivalent. The possibility of an agostic C-H?In interaction is discussed. The addition of 1 equiv of Me4NCl to 1 results in the formation of [Me4N][InClMes3] (2). The compounds InClMes2 (3) and InCl2Mes (4) were prepared from InMes3 by means of exchange reactions with InCl3. The reaction of InMes3 with 2 equiv of Me3NHCl yields InCl2Mes(NMe3) (5), which slowly redistributes to give a mixture of 4 and InCl2Mes(NMe3)2 (6). The structures of 1, 2, and 3 have been confirmed by X-ray crystallography.
