PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel optically active imidazolium salt for the synthesis of nitrogen-containing heterocyclic carbene as the ligand of organic catalyst and metal catalyst, in particular a bicyclic optically active imidazolium salt, and a method of producing the same. SOLUTION: The present invention provides an imidazolium salt represented by formula (1). (R1-R5 are H, hydrocarbon groups each independently or adjacently forming a ring, alkoxy groups, aryloxy groups, alkylthio groups, arylsulfonyl groups, or the like; X is a substituted/unsubstituted C1-C4 carbon chain, a substituted/unsubstituted N, O, S, or an atom group comprising a combination of Cs optionally substituted with these hetero atoms; Z is a halogen atom, PF6, BF4, ClO4, or BPh4). The preparation of new chiral bicyclic imidazoles 5 and their transformation into imidazolium salts 6 and 7 are reported. The utility of the salts as precursors for chiral N-heterocyclic carbenes was demonstrated by the synthesis of C-N-C pincer Ni-complex 13h, the structure of which was characterized by single-crystal X-ray analysis.
