The oxidation of cis- and trans-2-alkyl-5-methyl-5-acetyl-1,3-dioxanes followed by reaction of the chlorides of the obtained acids with 4-hydroxy-4'-cyanobiphenyl gave the corresponding esters.Investigation of their liquid-crystal characteristics showed that the trans isomers form a liquid-crystalline phase in narrower range of temperature than the analogous esters of the acids not containing a methyl radical in the dioxane fragment.The cis isomers do not exhibit liquid-crystal characteristics.
