The reaction of (η5-C5Me5)(CO)2FeAs(SiMe 3)2 with RAsCl2 (R = 2,4,6-t-Bu3C6H2) in THF afforded the twice metalated cyclotetraarsine [(η5-C5Me5)(CO)2FeAsAsR] 2. However, if the freshly prepared reaction mixture was treated with ((Z)-cyclooctene)Cr(CO)5, the metal-functionalized diarsene was intercepted as its Cr(CO)5 adduct (η5-C5Me5)(CO)2FeAs[Cr(CO) 5]=AsR. Similarly the complex (η5-C5H5)(CO)(PPh 3)FeAs[Cr(CO)5]=AsR was prepared. The novel compounds were characterized by elemental analyses and spectroscopic methods (IR, 1H and 13C NMR, and mass spectroscopy). The molecular structure of the diarsene derivative (η5-C5Me5)(CO)2FeAs[Cr(CO) 5]=AsR was established by a single-crystal X-ray diffraction study [P1 space group; Z = 2, a = 1057.0 (4) pm, b = 1246.6 (5) pm, c = 1577.2 (7) pm; α = 88.08 (3)°, β = 86.20 (3)°, γ = 82.37 (3)°].
